Fireplace Tools and Accessories

A fireplace can indeed render several years of satisfaction, but you must use the proper tools to make fire building as simple and easy as possible. Like most of the things we enjoy, fireplaces take effort to keep working effectively and ready for use whenever we like. Excellence is in the details, as noted at http://www.fireplacescreensetc.com, so be sure your hearth is prepared. We'd like to suggest a few fireplace supplies to look for when you are shopping for your hearth.

Fireplace firebacks were first introduced in Europe and were then brought to the Americas during colonial times and are once again gaining popularity for both functional use as well as artistic appeal. Cast iron firebacks are put inside the opening of the fireplace toward it's backwall. They serve to retain heat as well as conserve the backwall. Rather than permitting the heat to escape up the chimney the cast iron firebacks will absorb heat. Many hours after the fire has gone out, a fireback will continue to disperse heat into the surrounding area.

Hearth tools need to have at least a shovel, broom, and a poker. Always keep the fireplace hearth area clear of ash because this will often smother fires making it really challenging to keep the flame alive. The poker helps move logs so the wood can burn evenly. If you don't have these basic tools, you will not be able to competently maintain a fire.

Wood baskets make terrific accessories for your hearth and can be practical and stylish. You can find these hearth accessories made to go with other fireplace equipment such as your tools and screen. If you purchase an accentuating holder, you'll both unify the entire hearth decor while also keeping wood next to the fireplace for those nights when you don't feel like going outdoors to retrieve it from your backyard. Lastly, you should also purchase a carrier that will allow you to transport logs from the outdoor rack to the fireplace basket. A carrier will allow you to not only transport more wood in the house, but they can also keep your clothes and floors free from debris, dirt, and bark.

Be sure to check if the fireplace screen is the appropriate size for your particular fireplace. Next, they should accent the other accessories or the area will be filled with items that don't match and will take away from the overall look and feel of the area. Remember, purely decorative glass fireplace screens do not stop sparks from destroying the floor, and they could be destroyed if they are placed in front of an active fire. So, you should acknowledge how you want to use the screen then begin looking for the screen that is best suited to your home decor, preferences, and budget.

For a fire to function correctly, it needs to breathe. A fire receives most of its oxygen from underneath, which is why you need to get fireplace grates or andirons. A fireplace grate will lift the logs from the hearth floor so a fire is able to and stay burning. The size of your grate will depend on how big the fireplace opening is. Some grates are designed for more wood but usually they hold 5-6 medium-sized logs inside. You want the length of the grate to be about 4-6 inches short of the actual size of the hearth opening so that oxygen can correctly feed the fire.

Fireplace candle holders are a great replacement to an empty fireplace hearth during the summer months. These hearth accessories often feature fancy scroll work and usually accommodate many candles which come together to provide the romantic glow of a real fire. While you aren't using them, you can prominently feature the decorative candelabra on top of the mantle and still complement the hearth decor.

Today, andirons are used basically for decorative purposes to embellish your hearth, but they also might be used functionally instead of fireplace grates. Andirons stand straight-up and always have some type of shank running crosswise to hold wood aloft from the floor of the hearth. These unique fireplace accessories will have a long or short shank. A longer shank holds more logs so that you can make bigger fires. Many of these wood holding accessories are especially designed to magnify or augment the decor of your current hearth. For instance, a set of cat andirons can feature eyes that reflect and illuminate when a fire is actively roaring away causing an enchanting decorative effect that adds style to the decor of the room.

Although there are a lot of details that need to be considered when operating a fireplace, in reality the hearth will more than likely bring you more joy and satisfaction than any fixture in your home. You should always use a grate or andirons to hold wood off the floor and then to keep the area clean using your fireplace tools. Block sparks from flying by using a fire place screen or spark guard and always remember, a clean hearth is a happy hearth!
