Propane Gas Fireplace vs Natural Gas Fireplace
Submitted by DanielW

When considering what the benefits are to installing a propane gas fireplace vs. a natural gas fireplace there are many things to consider. First of all both kinds run off of gas rather than electricity or wood, and during a power outage they can be considered a reliable source of heat. When compared to a typical wood burning stove, both are cleaner considering the amount of dust the fireplace spreads throughout the room. Despite all these similar qualities there lies some substantial differences. When deciding to purchase your gas fireplace, you should consider both options carefully and decide what works best with your personal situation before making a purchase.

In many homes there will be a “city gas” connection for gas stoves or ovens. If this is the case in your home then installing a natural gas fireplace may be the easiest route to take. Also if you a natural gas hookup available then natural gas may be cheaper. Of course this is not always the case and the price of natural gas largely depends on the area you live in. If natural gas is not available in your area then a propane gas fireplace will definitely be the best way to go.
Be sure to check in your local area and see what suppliers are available. Some suppliers are willing to come to your home to fill your tanks if you don’t have a city gas connection.

Another problem with natural gas is that it is difficult and expensive to transport, however if natural gas suppliers are nearby this is not a problem. Either way when comparing the cost of natural gas and propane gas, propane gas is the most inexpensive and therefore makes it the most sensible choice.

If the distance or transportation issues and the costs do not make any difference to you then there are still several other differences you should consider before deciding on a propane gas fireplace or a natural gas one. One good quality about natural gas is that it burns cleaner, which will result in the fireplace leaving less residue from heating then a propane one. Propane fireplaces tend to leave a thin oily film on windows and other surfaces. Also many people argue that natural gas is the most earth-friendly of the two gases because it is taken directly from the soil, while propane gas must be processed. All things considered, however, the cost and location will usually be the deciding factor when determining the right type of fireplace for your home.
